| Joe Cocker did the best ever cover of the Beatles "A little help from my friends" probably the only artist to improve on a Beatles song, absolute brilliant.

Yes Apple no doubt about that call!
Mine would be Eve Cassidy " Somewhere Over The Rainbow"
Mick Fleetwood after seeing her perform it was blown away commenting that it was the definitive rock and roll performance of all time. |

You'd have to ask Mick Fleetwood
Interesting point though and I thought the same myself - so then here's my go at interpreting Mick's reported statement.
I think Mick was using Rock n Roll as an umbrella term. Perhaps trying to lend more weight to her performance than using the term "Pop" which I think in many peoples eyes and or minds, certainly perhaps in many serious Musos eyes and minds [mine for sure], carries less resonance due to variety of factors, not least being "Pop's" connotations with being almost throwaway and or manufactured "thin" music. "The Monkees" "The Archies" "White Plains" "One Ton And A feather" Tony Burrows, Johnathan King etc etc through to "Milli Vanilli" in reality the list is endless.
The serious side of "Pop" taking the Floyd as one example [they had hit singles] hated the term and would not answer to being bracketed as a "Pop Group"
Moody Blues sang "I'm just a Singer in A Rock And Roll Band" I don't think anyone would consider The Moody Blues a Rock And Roll band.
ELO's Jeff Lynne "We're a Rock n Roll Band with strings." hence no doubt their version of " Roll Over Beethoven" His band was laced with Classical musicians.
LED ZEP Sang "Rock n Roll". . . .Robert Plant "We're not a progressive band only two bands in the World are truly progressive. The Beatles and the Floyd. We're Rock n Roll paying homage to the blues"
I think certainly with some Musos at least the Term "Rock n Roll" has entered the lexicon as an honoured term transcending its initial very narrow meaning. Which often happens with words, taking say the word " gay " as an obvious example, its original meaning of being joyous is almost lost now, though of course is still there.' Language is organic and why Latin is used by priests and doctors or was, because being "dead" its words and meaning remains the same i.e. they don't gather the moss of common usage.
I listened one night to a discussion on the radio sometime ago now, wherein it was contended by some Muso or critic I can't remember whom, that "Rock Around The Clock"was not truly "Rock n Roll" nor were Bill Haley and the Comets. Now for many of course "Rock Around The Clock" rightly or wrongly is often cited as the birth of Rock n' Roll of course Bill only mentions "Rock" in the song.
Back to the Topic then I think Mick was saying it was one hell of a fucking performance and in his enthusiasm grabbed the first musical term that came into head that in some way communicated his feelings. And thereby paid Eve, whom incidentally was regarded as a jazz, blues, folk, gospel, country and pop performer - courtesy of claiming it was a "rock n roll" definitive performance, not believing he would ever have to explain the context of his utterance when so may people [he would perhaps claim should he feel compelled] would know what he meant anyway.
Have you heard it ? It is for me one hell of a cover perhaps brought about by her knowing she was going to die soon. I find it drips with subtext and emotion, that even Judy garland couldn't inject or extract from the song. So whether be classed as rock, blues, classical whatever that cannot diminsh the performance one iota - as you must have gathered by now - I'm with Big Mick on this. |

Snow Patrol are the most overrated band in the history of music. Their guitarist knows about 3 chords. He makes Noel Gallagher look like Gary Moore (RIP) |
