Liverpool are close to clinching a deal for Portugal Under 19 playmaker Joao Carlos Teixeira.

The Sporting Lisbon youngster starlet grabbed Liverpool’s attention by scoring against them in the NextGen - a Champions League-style tournament for youth teams.

Teixeira, who has just turned 19, is set to sign on at Merseyside for a deal worth up to just £850,000, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.

The playmaker, who has come through the same academy as Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Figo and Paulo Futre, was reportedly targeted at the insistence of Liverpool’s academy technical manager Jose Segura.

Teixeira has shown enough promise to train with Sporting’s first-team this season, but has yet to make his senior debut.

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon, close to £1m, to sign one of the most talented young players from the academy that has developed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani.

João Carlos, 19, is moving to Anfield after coming to the attention of the Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, during a scoring performance in the NextGen series of youth-team matches earlier this season.

The teenager has been talked about in Portugal as being similar to a young Deco but Sporting have financial issues and have decided to accept Liverpool's offer in keeping with their usual policy of nurturing young players and then selling them for profit.

Carlos has trained with Sporting's first team this season, but has not made his senior debut.

Another report says that this guy was signed on the instruction of Rodolfo Borrell. Could be one to look out for in the (near) future.

Sounds promising. I take it that he is being bought for the first team squad?

I guess he was signed at the insistence of Sergio, the bloke who oversees the reserve team...good news.

Presume you mean Jose Segura, he's the Academy not the Reserves.

Reports are saying it was Rodolfo Borrell who made him a priority, Rodolfo manages the Reserves Team and has been managing the U-19's team for the NextGen series
